Overcome your fear of Selling

If you’re working in the television, film, advertising or design industries, you’re almost certainly a creative individual. You want to make great insightful documentaries that will open people’s minds or tell stories of romances in far away places. Maybe you want to entertain them on a Saturday night, make them laugh, gasp and cry. You want to bring to life on screen an alien or a friendly bear.

When you need to find work, you have to market yourself. This is a world away from what we want to be doing. And you know you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince or princess.

If you’re like me, you’ll have lots of clutter in your head, and lots of voices saying you can’t do this. This can cloud your mind as you pick up the phone or draft an email, and it will influence the results you get. To lift this fog, you need to reframe your situation.

What is Reframing?

Reframing is a tool to take your existing point of view on a subject, task or situation, and look at it from a different point of view.

At the simple level, it’s looking for the silver lining on the cloud, or the bright side of life. But it’s more subtle than that.

You can change the meaning of an event or experience, in the same way putting a picture in a different frame changes the way it looks. That means looking at it from another person’s point of view. Or challenging the assumptions you’re making about a situation.

As a Coach, I often find myself helping my client reframe a situation. It’s not necessarily a binary situation, it’s not as simple as taking a situation that was negative and making it positive, or taking a situation they were out of control and showing they can be in control. Instead, I try and provide more varied ways for my clients to consider the problems they’re facing, to find solutions to them.

So here I’m going to reframe some common Mind Fog that stops you prospecting for work, try and reframe it into Clear Thinking, and give you Actions to take to move forward.
