A while ago I came across The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. I can thoroughly recommend the book as a way of opening up your creative mind, and helping tame your inner critic.
One of the first actions it talks about is writing Morning Pages. When you first get up, before you do anything else, you take an exercise book and write for three pages.
What do you write? That’s completely down to you. It’s a stream of consciousness. You put down whatever ideas come into your head.
I cheat a little. I tend to wait till I’m at work (I tend to be the first one in) so I sit with a cup of green tea, stick on some music and sit and write. I try not to be distracted by emails or my computer. Often I write in the third person – like I’m talking to myself. Too often I write “You were really distracted yesterday, what can you do to stop that?”
This sounds really silly, but it is like giving yourself a good talking to, and prompting yourself to take actions. I always have my day book to hand, so when I think of something to add to my to do list, I can write it down separately.
Of course, there are always days when I forget or get distracted, or don’t have time to do them, but I know when I have done my morning pages, I’m usually more productive and focused. And sometimes if I’ve come off a long call, or I have an idea for something, I write a few lines to capture what’s in my brain.
You might use your morning pages in a completely different way. And for more about Morning Pages, listen to the lady herself tell you about them!
