It doesn’t take much brain power to work out that you’ll get the best reference if the person recommending you is forewarned and forearmed.

I totally agree about following up. If you won a job, be sure to give your referees a call to say thanks. Even if your new employer didn’t request a reference from them, it’s a great way to stay in touch.
